Remember when Velcro didn't exist? Or when Blu-Tac hadn't been heard of? Or - closer to our automotive home - when cable ties were still just an inventor's idea? Well Peter Castellanos of Australia's Gold Coast thinks he has a breakthrough right up there with these other inventions that we now take for granted. He's devised a new type of plastic hose clamp, and reckons it makes the age-old stainless steel band designs look pretty ho-hum.

Specifically, he's talking better durability, in larger sizes, a lighter mass and a lower cost. Add to that the ability to colour-code the clamps, the fact that they are non-conducting - and well, we think that his better mousetrap also has some pretty darn good possibilities.
